On Monday, many women in Poland will go on a mass strike, protesting against a proposed new law, which would criminalise abortion in almost all cases.
According to the current law, abortion is legal only in case of rape or if the woman’s (or foetus’) life is in danger.
The new law would forbid even those exceptions, introducing jail sentences of up to 5 years for anyone causing “the death of a conceived child”.
As a response, activists are organizing a so called “Black protest” (“Czarny protest”). As a part of the protest, they are encouraging Polish women not to go to work on Monday. Because of that, many privately-owned business might be closed and many employees – women – might not show up for work.
The strike and protests will take place in over 60 Polish cities.
